
This Program seeks to address risk factors through early intervention, reducing academic failure by students in Park County. Through enrichment opportunities that complement academic programming, the Prevention and Wellness Department provides support to five after-school programs focusing on increasing proficiency in reading and math.

Satisfaction and Support for Afterschool Programs
- 77% of Wyoming parents are satisfied with the afterschool program their child attends.
- Wyoming parents cited convenient location (91%), child enjoyment (72%), ability to provide a nurturing environment(70%) and affordability (70%) as their top four reasons for selecting an afterschool program.
- 87% of adults surveyed in Wyoming agree that there should be “some type of organized activity or place for children and teens to go after school every day that provides opportunities to learn” and 74% support public funding for afterschool programs.

Need or Demand for Afterschool Programs
- 28% (19,338) of all Wyoming children not in afterschool would be likely to participate if an afterschool program were available in the community,regardless of their current care arrangement.
- Parents of non-participants believe that their children would benefit most from afterschool programs in the following ways: by receiving academic enrichment, having fun, improving their workforce skills and obtaining access to caring adults and mentors.

Afterschool Care Arrangements
- 38% (32,350) of Wyoming’s K-12 children are responsible for taking care of themselves after school. These children spend an average of 6 hours per week unsupervised after school.
- 19% (16,517) of Wyoming’s K-12 children participate in afterschool programs. On average, afterschool participants spend 4 hours per week in afterschool programs. Participation averages 2 days per week.
- 74% of Wyoming K-12 youth spend some portion of the hours after school in the care of a parent or guardian.
- Other care arrangements include traditional child care centers (12%), sibling care (15%) and non-parental adult care, such as a grandparent or neighbor (36%).
