The nursing practice at West Park Hospital is based on the PlaneTree model of quality and putting the patients and their families at the center of the care.

As nursing professionals, we support and model an environment of caring, listening, education and “doing the little things” that help make the patient stay go smoother. We have a goal of focusing on an environment of relationships that are built on trust, compassion and professional respect between nurses and patients, physicians as well as our peers.

We believe every patient and their support system has a right to a safe, protected environment and aggressively seek ways to reduce any risk of harm to them. We also feel that each unique patient has a right to nursing standards of care that not only meet but surpass the expectation of the patient and their support systems.

We support the PlaneTree culture by adding little touches that bring our community into the loop such as quilts made by local quilting guilds for the pediatric patients, Mastectomy bags made by the youth of our community; art work displayed by local artisits and fresh baked bread and cookies prepared by volunteers.

Preceptor Program

West Park Hospital, in coordination with Northwest College in Powell, WY, developed a Preceptor Program for sophomore RN students. West Park Hospital has 23 staff members participating in the training program presented by Northwest College, and the college has approximately 20 students participating at West Park Hospital. The student nurses work one-on-one with the West Park Hospital nurses in a variety of departments, obtaining vast nursing experience to better prepare the student for employment after they graduate. West Park Hospital nursing staff has also preceptored University Of Wyoming nursing students.

Nurse Extern Program

West Park Hospital, in conjunction and collaboration with Northwest College, is dedicated to providing an opportunity for nursing students to practice their clinical skills in a workplace setting. To further expand this collaboration, a Nursing Externship Program has been developed. A student nurse has the opportunity to apply for employment as a Nurse Extern in various different nursing departments at West Park Hospital. The Nurse Extern works under the direct supervision of an assigned RN and is able to practice clinical skills they have obtained as a nursing student. Currently, there are five Northwest College nursing students participating in this on- going program.
