Why live in Cody?
Mild winters, full summers and friendly folks are all part of the package of this city in northwestern Wyoming.

Cody retains its small-town atmosphere even during the full swing of the summer tourist season, and it's a place where you will see people you know at the grocery store and the post office. There's plenty to see and do at any time of year, as well.

As the main gateway to Yellowstone National Park, Cody's summers are full of energy and activities. From the annual Plains Indian Museum Powwow at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center to the Fourth of July festivities to nightly rodeos, summer in Cody is a full schedule.

Cody summers also are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, biking, fishing, boating and camping are some of the preferred summertime activities of West Park Hospital employees. And there's no need to drive to Yellowstone every weekend ... if you don't want to.

Shoshone National Forest -- along with dozens of campgrounds, trails and sights -- encompasses much of the area between Cody and Yellowstone. And Buffalo Bill Reservoir and State Park are just west of the city.

Eight-thousand-foot Heart Mountain looms over Cody just to the east of town, and the Shoshone River has dozen of spots for fly-fishing or casting a line or whitewater rafting.

In town, Cody has more 20 developed parks and nearly nine miles of developed trails and pathways. Facilities include playgrounds, ball fields and soccer fields, a 7,000-square-foot skate park with eight bowls and a street section and a recreation center with basketball courts, an aquatic center with a lap pool and water slide, an indoor track, a cardio and weight area and racquetball courts, among other amenities.

Winters generally are mild with moderate snowfall that quickly melts, but Cody is close to winter retreats that are great for cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing and some of the best ice falls in the world are waiting for climbers right up the South Fork of the Shoshone River.

Not into nature?
If communing with nature isn't your thing, Cody also has many top cultural attractions.

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center encompasses six museums with enough exhibits to spend a year exploring, including Western art, guns, American Indian artifacts and special attractions and presentations.

The Cody Art League maintains a sales gallery in the visitor center and sponsors about 20 shows each year, displaying both amateur and professional works. It features a wide variety of works by both fine artists and high-quality artisans in the sales gallery.

The Park County Library's Cody Branch will move into a newly remodeled, state-of-the-art space in October, and will feature a café, Children's Library and activities and the Planetree Health Information Center, a health and wellness collaboration between the county library system and West Park Hospital.

Cody also keeps its Old West roots, featuring nightly rodeos from June through August, the highlight of which is the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede Rodeo, which takes place around the Fourth of July each year.

Old Trail Town also pays homage to the early settlers of the northwest Wyoming and southern Montana, both good and bad, and includes a large collection of American Indian artifacts.

The free Buffalo Bill Dam Visitor Center also is worth the trip, and visitors can walk out on top of the 295-foot dam.

Cody also has a variety of restaurants, from sushi to fast food and, of course, steaks.
